Bridges

Bridges are an option for restoring missing teeth without an implant.  Bridges use healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth to anchor a permanent restoration. Missing teeth wreak havoc on your mouth over time.  Gaps in the teeth can cause problems with eating and speech, and when a tooth is missing long enough the jaw bone is vulnerable and the structure becomes compromised.  Dr. Kathleen Falsey, DDS places permanent bridges to repair patient smiles and restore function to the mouth.

With a bridge, the replacement tooth is held in place by caps on the teeth on either side.  The process can usually be completed in two visits.  First, an impression of the area is taken so that a dental laboratory can create a bridge that will fit perfectly. On your second visit, the bridge will be cemented into place.  Bridges can be replaced if needed but with proper care, they last a lifetime!

Sealants

Sealants are a preventative measure used to preserve the teeth and tooth enamel.  Almost half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth, and a sealant is the best defense against early tooth decay.  Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces of molars, where the pits and grooves tend to trap food and bacteria.  Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early.

Sealants are applied to surfaces of these molars much like paint. The plastic resin fills any pits and grooves on the surface and hardens. Now the surface is protected from bits of food being stuck, so bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay.  The enamel is also protected from plaque and acids.  Sealants can effectively prevent cavities for up to ten years but can be reapplied if necessary.

Fixing Loose Teeth

Once you’re an adult, you’ll hopefully never have a loose tooth again. But when permanent teeth do start wiggling, Bayberry Dental Care is here to help. Secondary occlusal trauma is the term used by doctors to describe damage to the gum ligaments, and loose teeth due to periodontal disease, instead of sudden blows, are the focus of this week’s post.

When periodontitis reaches its most severe state, it’s not just soft tissue that is affected. The tissue of the jaw bone, like the gum pockets and ligaments, may lose mass and recede. This will cause teeth to come loose and put them at risk for falling out. While the loss of any adult tooth is bad, the loss of the molars will oblige the front teeth to take on biting forces they cannot sustain, pushing them out of place and making them even looser.

Dr. Falsey is trained in periodontal therapies to get patients’ gum disease under control, which must be done if any fix for the teeth is to be permanent. A splint can be applied to the teeth in order to distribute bite forces more evenly among them during the periodontal treatment or on a permanent basis, and bone grafts can rebuild lost jaw tissue.
