Impacted Wisdom Teeth

If wisdom teeth are impacted and embedded into the bone, this simply means that they don’t have room to emerge normally inside the mouth. Additionally, impacted wisdom teeth may try to emerge, but if they succeed, they will grow at an angle that keeps them from fully erupting. Dr. Kathleen Falsey, DDS of Bayberry Dental Care will likely suggest extraction for impacted wisdom teeth because keeping them will only result in pain, and/or infection.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause serious periodontal issues and can make brushing and flossing both painful and difficult. As the condition worsens, impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain in the jaw, as well as frequent headaches, and even cysts. If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you fear that they may be impacted, schedule a consultation with Dr. Kathleen Falsey, DDS to discuss your treatment options.

Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons that one or more teeth may need to be extracted. Common reasons include wisdom teeth that are at risk of infection, dental trauma, or tooth decay that cannot be reversed and extraction becomes the only option. If a tooth is broken or has been damaged, Dr. Kathleen Falsey, DDS will try to fix it with a filling, a dental crown, or perhaps dental bonding, first. Extraction is usually a last resort, but when it’s necessary, here’s what you can expect.

Permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, but unfortunately, accidents happen and wisdom teeth erupt. If wisdom teeth aren’t extracted, they put a patient at risk for infection because they may not grow in properly. Sometimes teeth will be extracted for orthodontic procedures because a crowded mouth may not allow teeth to move in their proper direction. If Dr. Falsey decides that extraction is the right procedure for you, she will discuss the procedure in full detail to guarantee that you are as comfortable as possible.

When a Tooth Extraction May Be Necessary

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, having a tooth pulled is sometimes necessary. At Bayberry Dental Care, Dr. Kathleen Falsey, DDS would like you to know that before she considers extraction, every effort will be made to try to repair and restore your tooth.  You’re probably most familiar with wisdom teeth extractions, but other reasons for the procedure may include:

  • Severe tooth damage/trauma – some teeth have such extensive decay and damage (broken or cracked) that repair is not possible.

  • Orthodontic treatment – people getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

  • Extra teeth – extra teeth may block other teeth from erupting, therefore, will require extraction.
